Sarah Cain, played by Lisa Pepper, is a successful newspaper columnist who is having a career slump, and anxious to get back on top of her game. The product of an unhappy childhood, Sarah wound up in the foster care system with her only sister, Ivy, and she was further traumatized when Ivy married an Amish man and moved away. A confirmed commitment-phobe, Sarah still feels as if everybody she truly cares for will eventually abandon her -- a sentiment her caring boyfriend, Bryan, is doing his best to dispel. When Sarah's sister dies without a will, Sarah is left guardian to Ivy's five orphaned children, ranging in age from 16 to 6. To the trepidation of the children and their Amish neighbors, Sarah moves the brood back with her to the big city -- a huge adjustment for her and her country-reared children. At the urging of her editor, played by Elliot Gould, Sarah exploits her fascinating new family situation in her regular column, with stellar success. However, she hasn't bothered to tell the kids that she is using their personal lives to boost her readership, and when they do find out, they feel hurt and betrayed. Sarah feels like a failure as a woman and a mother, and she's about to admit defeat and hand the kids over to another guardian. However, Sarah ultimately realizes that in order to achieve her own "redemption," she first has to make some drastic changes in her life, reevaluate her priorities, and accept the love that is all around her before it is lost forever...
Jennifer O'Dell plays Madison, a sexy newspaper writer. She's accustomed to being treated like a rising star by Bill, her boss. Rabidly ambitious, Madison has her sights set on Sarah's job, and when Sarah's new columns prove a big hit, Madison has a nasty trick up her sleeve.
